Last week I received a very interesting comment about Cat-tool – Part 2 post: “What about end clients? They do not even know what a Cat-tool is”.
That is true. Most end clients really do not have the slightest idea what a Cat-tool is. This is one of the reasons I always dedicate extra time to prepare a different and customized marketing plan for my end clients. They have so much going on in their own environment, and translation is certainly not their area of expertise (otherwise why would they hire our services?). All they want is the translation service to be done quickly and with quality assured. To them it really does not matter which platform you use to perform your job as long as you deliver it with the quality expected.
When talking about end clients, whether you use or do not use a Cat-tool it is really up to the translator. In my opinion it is always nice to show on your website or profile that you work with a translation software (keep in mind that you do not have only direct clients, but there are a lot of translation agencies that would like to know if you work with Cat-tools). The end client may not care about what type of software you use, but I am sure you will put a smile on their face if you mention that you are able to work with a wide range of file formats (including the ones they work with) or that you will be able to deliver consistent work with the quality they expect.
The secret is: Think about the benefits a Cat-tool can bring to your work and express them in your words to the end client. You will see that you do not even need to mention which tool you are using, your words will point out what the end client is really interested in:
- An increase in your productivity
- Consistency improvement
- Quality assurance
- Ability to work with different file formats
- Ability to keep the same formatting of the original document
If your text looks somewhat like this:
“I work with XXX (cat-tool name) and translation memories to keep your texts consistent and accurate”.
That may confuse the client, instead try something like this…
“Working with the most up-to-date translation software, I am able to work with a wide variety of file formats and keep the consistency and quality you expect for your texts.”
Now it is up to you… try out some of your own ideas and good luck!
